I have my C|EH and C|HFI I have experience recovering data from Windows, Android, and some iPhone but iPhone minimal compared to the other two. I have a phone I'm working on for a friend that gave me permission to recover data from the phone to help her determine if her son took anything in particular or told anyone what he took when he attempted to commit suicide. I just want to use my knowledge and experience to help her out. I've used a few tools to attempt to recover test messages and haven't found anything. The challenge I'm facing is Snapchat, I know their communication goes through a 3rd party server and once you view the messages "supposedly" they are deleted. I wanted to know if there is any way to recover this data or if it is stored anywhere temporarily on the iPhone. It is an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I have Kali Linux, iBeesoft iPhone data recovery, FTK Imager, Fonelab, Fonepaw, autopsy, sleuthkit, and I even downloaded and setup Paladin which is a linux distro for forensics. I was curious if anyone has any experience recovering this type of data or suggestions and if this is even possible without involving Snapchat themselves.

I'm not aware of a way to accomplish what you want with the tools that you have. That being said I have never tried either.

With use of most paid tools it is possible to recover some chats and images from the snapchat logs.

Since this is an incident involving attempted suicide your local LEO office may be of help if they have the capabilities. LEO's are working overdose cases heavy right now to try and slow down the influx of fentanyl and other drugs.

Contacting Snapchat without a search warrant will not be helpful.

Yeah that is what I understood as well doing research typically it requires jail break and since IOS 12 it's locked WAY down and way harder to find/recover data.  Plus like I told my friend the 3rd party apps that run through the cloud and "are deleted supposedly" once viewed are next to impossible to recover without law enforcement and a warrant sent to snapchat to see if they can scrub their servers.  I appreciate the response to confirm my suspected conclusion.  I already tried a few of the tools and while I can recover some data snapchat is not one unless it was "saved" already.

Snapchat does maintain some data on their servers. There are several "what if's" involved in what the will and wont have though.

The only way they will provide it is with a search warrant though. From what you are describing it sounds like the family doesn't want to take it to that level.

I'm not sure if they do but I've let them know that's an option several times. I've tried everything I know how to do without jail breaking the device since it's only a month old.  I told her I'd try a few other tools but these third party apps typically don't store local data unless screen shot or saved and there were only a few things he did that with.  So I told her my resources have pretty much been exhausted and if she wants anything additional she's going to have to get local law enforcement involved to see if they have access to tools I don't or get a warrant to engage snapchat.  I appreciate everyone's insight and advice.

On a technical level, I would suggest that you can check out RecoveryTool's Snapchat data recovery service. However, I don't recommend browsing anyone's privacy for whatever reason. Because inappropriate behaviour can lead to aggravation of the problem, I think a consultation with a psychiatrist should be necessary.
