No matter what I search for using Forum Search, it returns the same results. I thought maybe it was because I wasn't a registered user, but alas, I am now logged in and it still behaves the same way for me.

Can I get a sanity check? Eager to tap into the collective knowledge contained within 🙂

Well, and what is the "super specific search term"?

The forum search sucks (and sucks big).

An actual search for that (literally, without quotes) will give results containing any among:

super
specific
search
term

Example, if I search for "super glue" (without quotes):

https://www.forensicfocus.com/forums/?wpfs=super+glue&wpfin=entire-posts&wpfd=0&wpfob=relevancy&wpfo=desc

first two results (by relevancy) are:

https://www.forensicfocus.com/forums/mobile-forensics/galaxy-s5-mini-fingerprint-replication/#post-6577999

which contains "glue" BUT NOT "super", and:

https://www.forensicfocus.com/forums/general/gas-pump-skimmer/#post-6576296

which contains the actual "super glue" string.

If you search for "super glue" (with double quotes) you find nothing.

If you search for 'super glue' (single quotes) you find the same as first results.

Usually google with "site:forensicfocus.com" (without quotes) specified gives better results.

I'll take a look at this when I have a chance. Are you saying it's broken or just not working optimally? There's been a recent update to the forum software, I'm not sure if that's impacted anything or if this was an existing issue.

Well, since the forum changed software (or version) it is sub-optimal (I am being kind).

The search function makes no or little sense, possibly it is very good but without specific usage instructions, it is - let's say - different from any other one I have seen.

Normally if you put more than one word in the search phrase, it means "search for any", but if you put the words into quotes (single or double ones) it means "exact phrase".

On some (few) boards, you can use OR AND operators in the search string.

Besides, in *any* normal board search there are TWO fields when an option *like* "Find posts by user", one where you put the "Search phrase" and one where you put the actual "user name".

Yep, completely agree there's some basic functionality which is lacking in terms of search. From what I can see it's not a newly introduced bug or misconfiguration issue so I'll reach out to the developers and see what can be done, either through them or via an alternative search engine if we need to go down that route (which we did previously with acceptable results, I think). Thanks for flagging it up.

Thank you for the replies, @jaclaz, @Jamie! "super specific search term" was a bad example, haha.

I think I've isolated the issue. Anything I search for in the side search bar returns the same generic results. When I say side search bar I mean the bar in the yellow box: https://imgur.com/a/w0gDTDZ

I like the Google site: idea, and your observations on the search behaviors are appreciated.

Update - exact text matching is now on the development to-do list. No ETA so don't hold your breath but it's coming...
