MVS keynote presenter: Kevin Mulcahy

We’re honored to have former federal prosecutor, Kevin Mulcahy join us as a keynote presenter at Magnet Virtual Summit 2025. In this presentation, Kevin will recount his own story as a survivor of child sexual abuse and address lessons learned from his case by combining Kevin’s experience both as a victim and a long-time prosecutor of child exploitation cases.

MVS keynote presenter: Brett Shavers

Brett Shavers is bringing his thousands of hours in the field and in training to Magnet Virtual Summit 2025 as a keynote presenter! We can’t wait to see what kind of insights he’ll share.

Magnet Virtual Summit 2025 keynote: addressing the tipping point of DFIR

Digital forensics has become a pressure cooker, and in the face of increasing data volumes, AI deepfakes, and legal/privacy restrictions, investigative teams are being asked to do more faster, and with fewer resources. This gap between the increasing demand and the lack of resources creates what we call, “The Justice Risk Zone.” In this keynote presentation, hear from Magnet Forensics leadership about how we’re addressing that risk by giving users an Investigative Edge, thanks to solutions like Magnet One. Plus, we’ll talk about how solutions like Magnet Nexus can make a big impact in the world of enterprise investigations, and much more.

Other MVS Presentation Highlights

Mobile Unpacked S3:E2 // apples, onions, and ogres: dealing with layered iOS data structures – Chris Vance

In the Dreamworks film Shrek, the titular character said that “Ogres are like onions. They have layers.” Well, Apple isn’t so different from the green hero in that their lovable monster, iOS also features its own layers of data structures all over the file system. This episode of Mobile Unpacked will cover identifying these structures and how to peel back the different layers to find the key artifact data hidden across different file types such as SEGB, Plist files, and SQLite Databases.

An introduction to media file structure for digital investigations – Bertram Lyons & Brandon Epstein

In today’s digital world, the ease of manipulating and sharing multimedia files with emerging technologies has made it increasingly challenging to detect alterations and prove authenticity. Understanding the underlying structure of these files is essential to ensuring reliable evidence analysis. This session provides an in-depth look at multimedia file structure and how it encodes and decodes data, empowering investigators to evaluate file origins and integrity with confidence.

Join Medex Forensics’ CEO & Co-Founder Bertram Lyons as he introduces advanced methodologies that go beyond surface-level metadata to reveal deep-dive techniques for authenticity examination.

The DFIR triad: leveraging SaaS, AI and automation – Joe Pochron

This fireside chat with subject matter experts will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and automation can revolutionize the digital forensic process, easing the burden on personnel and enhancing both speed and accuracy. The chat will also address potential challenges, such as the need for proper oversight of AI systems to avoid bias, and the importance of maintaining a balance between automated and human-driven analysis.

Rethinking digital forensics in incident response – Jason Jordaan

The term DFIR has become really popular over the last several years and is used as an all-encompassing term for digital forensics and incident response. But the reality is that there is actually an inherent contradiction between digital forensics and incident response, because the actual end goals of digital forensics and incident response are not the same. The reality is that for most organizations, incident response focuses on making the pain go away, and maybe improving security going forward.

Thinking about a legal outcome is far from the reality for most organizations. So, while incident response may involve the use of techniques and methods used in digital forensics, the incident response is not always done with a legal end in mind. However, the growing regulatory environment in countries around the world is changing the landscape when it comes to incident response. Now, more than ever, responding to an incident cannot simply be about making the pain go away. Digital forensics is needed now more than ever before.

Digital forensics is not only necessary for identifying the perpetrators to hold them accountable, but now it is also needed to defend an organization that has suffered from a cybersecurity incident against regulatory or legal action that could be brought against it as a result of the incident. This talk will explore the typical different focus between digital forensics and incident response and how these two fields have diverged in practice over the years, as well as how the changing regulatory and legal environment around the world should bring them back into closer alignment.

MVS Capture The Flag

Another amazing Magnet Virtual Summit Capture The Flag (CTF) is coming to Magnet Virtual Summit 2025!

The CTF will be powered by Hexordia, and it will be a three-hour timed event that will test your skills while competing with others. We don’t want to give away too much, but we promise that Jessica Hyde and interns from Champlain College’s Digital Forensic Association have created a CTF that will be fun, challenging, and full of learning opportunities. Plus, for this CTF, you’ll have the opportunity to compete as an individual or in teams!

This CTF will take place on Thursday, February 13 from 11:00 – 2:00 PM EST, and it will test your skills while competing with others.

Important: Please note registration for this event closes end of day February 10, and images and download links will be sent out on February 6.

2025 Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Multimedia Forensics and Disinformation Detection

February 28 All day

The second edition of the AI4MFDD workshop is intended to disseminate recent developments in AI-enabled multimedia forensics and disinformation detection methods. Multimedia data carries value not only in its content but also in digital forensics for combating crimes and fraudulent activities. Deliberate manipulations of multimedia content for malicious purposes have been a prevailing problem in many walks of life.

With the phenomenal leap of AI and machine learning (deep learning in particular) in recent years, realistically forged multimedia data is appearing as disinformation and fake news that are impacting social justice at the personal level, major political campaigns at the national level, and the stability of international relationships at the global level.

The AI4MFDD 2025 workshop will facilitate synergies in research and development in the areas of multimedia forensics and disinformation detection by attracting international participants from academia, law enforcement, industry, and end-users.
