Hi everyone

I'm going to be progressing into my 3rd year of a Forensic Computing degree at BCU but I've been struggling for ideas on a good project that I can do for the 3rd year. Does anyone have any ideas please? I have been trying to think of a bit of a fun project in all honesty.

Thanks

Chris.

Maybe if you could provide some info on the background you have, the specific fields you have an interest in, it would be easier to provide some "customized" suggestions.

There is already a "stable" page dedicated to this

and further ones linked to

I'd be interested in destroying devices and seeing how much data I can recover and what impact the destruction technique I use has. I was thinking more for portable devices and destroying them using electrical appliances such as a microwave.

Hmmm, that "research", at least limited to CD/DVD's has been already done, no data whatsoever was ever recovered, more than a few microwave ovens were destroyed in the making of the research

Sledgy© currents

has also proved to be an exceptionally effective and economical means to destroy a hard disk or USB stick/memory chip/whatever wink .

Seriously, if you destroy the device (no matter HOW exactly), the device is destroyed.

What may make (IMHO) some sense could be researching what you can recover without destroying the device.

Particularly on USB sticks (or more generally FLASH memory chips) which kind of data (if any) is still recoverable after a single zero pass, what are the "data retention risks" with sticks with controllers that make use of "wear leveling", what methods can be found to recover RAW data (bypassing the controller) etc.

There are more than a few directly or loosely related threads

that you may want to have a look at.

Please consider - as a side note - that recent USB 3.0 sticks are actually a USB 3.0 bridge to SATA and a (smallish) SATA SSD, so things may be even completely different from conventional Flash based sticks.

That's great. Thanks for that. I'll take a look at the links you provided and have a think about what I can do.

Cheers

Chris.
