The wise decision is to read the book for yourself, and determine from your reading if it was worth it or not to you.

If you were to go with that Amazon review, you might be shy. I mean, any book on data forensics should be spot on, or nearly technically exact and free from errors. Given the number of foo-bars the reviewer has posted you _might_ be gun shy. On the flip side, if you find humor in other people's mistakes, this may be a fun purchase for you! 😉

Seriously, don't base your decision on whether or not to read a book on the opinions of others. Like movie reviews, album reviews, etc. Read for yourself, think for yourself. There are too many variables involved (background, experience, knowledge level, etc.) for most reviews and opinions to be applicable to _you_. Unless you find someone else or others with the same or nearly similar composite of you. )

Cheers!

Hence asking here 😉

I dunno, I guess that before I fork out hard earned cash for a book that claims to be "the best damn book in the world" about something ( assuming that I am unwilling to illegally obtain a copy without paying for it ) asking for another review would be reasonable - I can't find a _single_ review of this book anywhere ( other than that Amazon one ) - yet if I look for reviews of books I consider "classics" - File System Analysis, Forensic Discovery, or nearly any of the other books recommended on this site ( with the notable exception of the one I list above - which _was_ recommended to me by another on FF ) you can find multiple reviews …

That's not to say that lack of reviews is indicative of either the distribution width or the quality of the book - it may well be brand new ( although I note it has been out for nearly a year ) - I was merely looking for a second opinion other than that of the recommender. I read "The Times" for reviews of fiction, and consider it a fairly trusted source, similarly I'd read reviews here on FF, from names I recognise and know to be of a trustworthy nature -)

Then again - I've read some things which reach critical acclaim which are terrible - so I guess you win some, you loose some 😉

If I had time & finance to read everything - then that would be great - but the reality is that I, and most other people, have to make a choice, and the informed opinion of others is the best way I find …

Since you're basing your decision off of reviews, then perhaps the review on Amazon is all you need. I would feel any forensic work that contains a number of errors may be viewed with suspicious eyes …

😉

That being said, there are other forensic books with good reviews on Amazon that I also wouldn't recommend. But this is where it becomes opinion oriented. My review of these same thumbs up books would be opposite, thumbs down. Just goes to show at the end only _you_ can decide what _you_ need and want. Imagine missing out because reviews were written or perceived in a way that you felt were negative. Only to later read the book for yourself and find valuable information. Or vice versa - good reviews and so you invest your resources (time and money) only to find it worthless, except for to start your grill or use as a door stop. Could go either way.

Maybe you should gamble, invest in it, read it, then post your review )

Cheers!

I bought a copy of "The best damn book, etc. etc." I am afraid I didn't find it to be of much help. Basically all these books tell you the same thing. Which is why I am writing my own on what they don't teach you in computer forensics school. Things like ethics, expert testimony, the adversarial system, how to challenge digital evidence, how to work as the primary or secondary expert, how to analyse a case properly, etc.

All the stuff I cover in the course I teach.

Nobody talks about that in their book, even though they claim to in nearly every one of them.

Audio,
I read forensic science books with some regularity. Books of interest -

Criminal Profiling - Turvey
Criminal Investigations - Swanson
Criminal Psychology - Gross
Techniques of Crime Scene Investigation - Fisher

These are considered to be some of the more authoritative and informative books out there in the real forensic science arena. I managed to get all but one from my local law library.

I want to read any mobile forensic investigation book as starting point into formal mobile forensic investigation. Can anyone help me suggest any?

I believe that it is available on the Safari Bookshelf - http//www.safaribooksonline.com

There may be a free trial, which is as close as you are going to get to what you are asking on a forum full of law enforcement and people who's livlihood depends on being completely within the law.

Nice try though, if a bit misguided.
