hi all,
I'm throwing out a question that someone may be aware of.
Is there any way of checking an individual website's payment hosting provider?
For example, a merchant is using an unknown hosting provider when they should be using something like Sagepay/Protex/Worldpay.. is there any way of detecting what payment hosting provider they are actually using by going through their website/IP address?

I'm quite new to this, so please bear with me!
Thanks & Regards,
Laura

Assuming that you can get the URI (and for that, you'll probably need an account), you can do WHOIS to see to whom it is registered and a reverse IP lookup to identify the host.

You can also use a search engine to identify if the IP/host has attracted the attention of any of the various anti-hacking entities.

Sometimes a traceroute will provide information on the upstream provider which can be helpful and identifying the Autonomous System (AS) number might be useful as some of these are known to be associated with nefarious activities.

One caveat, however, is that there are a lot of registrars offering domain by proxy services (the actual domain name holder is not public), as well as low cost hosting services, such as GoDaddy in the US, which will host your site without disclosing your identity, so nothing is fool proof.

There are other techniques that you can sometimes use to get more information, however, many of these techniques border on or cross the line into hacking so I can't say that I'd recommend trying them. Web site vulnerability tests, for example, can reveal details of the underlying host which may or may not be informative, but many of these can also be detected and their use could subject you to civil or criminal action.

Well, some state right there on their page that they're using a particular payment provider, like PayPal, etc. If you're asking how to verify that, other than asking them (and asking them to provide documentation), then another means to do so is to submit a payment and see what appears on your credit card statement.

Use Social Engineering.

Works most every time.
