FWIW I just completed a 'prep course' for the CCE. I enjoyed the course and the material. I understand that it's simply dusting off the cover of the book of forensics and while I scour this website EVERYDAY - I get anxious about how little I know. I like the idea of testing and practical work, I learn best through hands on. So it works for me. I also understand that like ALMOST any credential, it's simply a 3rd party verifying you have a basic underlying knowledge that a group of people currently agree to. Only years of experience will bring expertise and true credentials so, unfortunately no matter what 'cert' I attain, it's only, hopefully a key to opening some doors….p.s. I don't even know what the other cert. abbreviation stands for 😯

Hi Joshsevo,
Thanks for the info on the CHFI, and congrats on passing the cert. exam. I'm looking to get it myself. Question did you take the EC-Council course or did you get the CHFI study guide and go off of that? I'm on a budget so I need to be careful how much I spend on certs right now. I'm looking at ACE and CHFI for starters. Thanks in advance.

I did not take a course but picked this stuff up from different places. The books are worthless. Most of the stuff on the test is general knowledge with a little more indepth.

Things like Ipod forensics is not covered in the book or there was a question on the test that has nothing to do with Forensics or computers.

It was like this

You just conducted an investigation on Sexual harrassment and now need to report your findings. Who would you report the findings too
1. The victim
2. The Victims lawyer
3. Nobody
4. Sexual harrassment Victims agency

WTF???? This has nothing to do with anything CHFI Nowhere on the test did it say anything about a computer or anything. So how can you study for that.

Honestly pay for the test, take it. If you fail it then try and remember the questions and then go study those parts so you get them correct the next time.

The CCE is a much better test personally and I plan on working on it soon. I am working on my CPT (cert Pen tester) right now and then will knock out the ACE and then CCE and maybe my Net+ if I feel frisky.

Thanks again, Joshsevo.

Yeah, I don't get how that question relates to CHFI at all, either. That sounds more like an issue for attorneys or paralegals.

From the sound of it, the $60 CHFI study guide may help, but the course isn't helpful for the exam. It also seems like self education is a big step toward being comfortable w/Computer Forensics, and the study guides only help w/the certs.

My goal for now is to become an independent computer forensic investigator, mostly in data recovery. Here's what/how I've been studying

* Reading articles on ForensicFocus site and Computer Forensics world sites
* Reading "Guide to Computer Forensics and Investigations, 4th edition" by Bill Nelson
* Reading "Windows Forensic Analysis" by Syngress Press
* Using demo versions of FTK, WinHex, and ProDiscover Basic
* (will purchase) CHFI Study Guide

Seems like overkill for the CHFI cert, but this should lay a good foundation for understanding Computer Forensics. I'm going this route because right now I'm on a budget and need to be careful how I invest money in courses and certs. I'll look at either the CCE cert or the SANS GCFA/GCFE cert next. Any suggestions will are greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Good luck w/your future certs and goals.

The CHFI curriculum is documented. Module 44 covers this type of investigation, doesn't it? And from what I gather from the other modules, there are other areas whhere computers are not the primary thing, but where the situations do occur in the context of computer-related investigations. Module 03, for example.

It is very much an issue for computer forensics examiners. Go the wrong route and you could end up without a client very quickly, and potentially damage your professional reputation.

Sorry, I don't mean to pull up a dead thread, but…. as a newbie I am just really curious about this question.. The question to me does not give enough supporting details to answer this correctly. who is my client, do I have a client or am I a LEO? Who's media am I inspecting for privacy concerns? If the victim is the client and they paid for my service, well that answers that I would imagine. Do i directly report the the client lawyer (with consent of the victim)? Thoughts, correct answer here? Too open ended?
