Have you considered reading everything about Hadoop, specifically HDFS?

I do not think you can come up with a single solution, although maybe a generic methodology is possible.

Learn everything about HDFS, and you may find something that can be a benefit. (recovery of replica data block without namenode?)

Hi Wulf,
are you looking to create a tool to capture artefacts direct from the server or an image? To the best of my knowledge, the images can be taken direct from the server (as they are already images) and normal IR can be done from there. This should be true of private / public clouds.

What sort of tool are you hoping to produce?

Cheers
Adrian
