Hi all. I've run across numerous sources for training on the CHFI certification. Is it a worthwhile pursuit? I've found the self study guide online but every place sells it for $600 or more. The reviews on Amazon of EC-Council's book have not been favorable but it doesn't appear to be due to content but instead on gramatical or citation issues.

Is anyone familiar with a) this certification b) the self study guides and c) where I may obtain the self-study material?

The exam is only 50 multiple choice questions and you only need to get 70% to pass. Would seem fairly easy to pass.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I haven't taken it yet, but I plan on it. I did order and receive the official EC-Council courseware from them, at a cost of about $300 (US). I have to be honest and tell you that I don't believe it's the best written courseware in the world. Aside from the grammatical and spelling errors that make it a difficult read, since they are so distracting, the content isn't anything different that you couldn't get from reading a few of the more popular 5 or 10 forensics books out there.

Having spoken to a few folks who have taken it, including those who have taken the class, studied the official courseware, and studied on their own with other sources, (all who passed, by the way) it doesn't sound like a difficult exam, and covers more of the general types of questions you might expect from a certification exam. I was told that if you could pass the Brainbench exam, you'd probably do OK on the CHFI as well. Have not confirmed that for myself yet, but I plan on it within the next month.

Bobby, where did you buy the courseware from? On EC-Council's site their shopping cart is handled by 2Go or something. Did you purchase it through them?

Do you know if the training class is mandatory? On the website it mentions that the class is mandatory in some countries.

I bought it directly from EC-Council's site (links to the 2Go site, actually). But this was almost a year ago, so the cost (and version) may be different now.

I don't think the class is required any more to take the exam, since it's offered throguh the standard prometric channels now, like any other cert. Far as I know, you can pay your $250 bucks and simply schedule and take it.

I just took this course and exam from InfoSec Institute in Chicago last month. It was a great course, well taught, good materials and hands on labs, licensed copy of FTK, helix CD, lots of tools, etc, included.

Granted, it was the first forensics course I've taken, but I've taken a ton of other IT courses during my career and this was a good course.

OldDawg,

So you took the exam, was it terribly difficult? What's the standard charge for taking the course through them? I really get the impression that you should be able to pass the course just by spending the $400 for the course materials.

Hi,

The exam wasn't difficult for the most part, but if you don't know the material, you will not pass the exam. I've been in the IT business for a couple decades so I think my background helped a lot during the exam. Also, there are some hacker questions that are not necessarily part of the CHFI course so you ought to have at least a fundamental knowledge of hacking as well.

So, I guess I'd say that if you are weak in core computer science and hacking you are at a disadvantage.

I completed the exam in the UK last December, was not difficult. but would say if you taking the exam in the UK, you will have to learn the US laws etc, but in general a good course..

1. The EC Council material is usually pretty lame (This from a CEI who teaches this stuff…)
2. What makes the class is the instructor, not the book.
3. The test is not all that hard from what I hear, but it does not carry the same reputation than the CCE does for example, especially since it doesn't have the practicals, just one test to take.
