Hello,

I would like people’s ideas on my dissertation ideas please. What I need to do is create a piece of forensics software and write a report about it.

I will be using Java or C#.
I will have about 300 hours to complete it in.
The software does not have to be original but has to different in some way (so I'm not just stealing others ideas ) )

I would like something that people in the forensic community would be able to use but yet is simple (ish) for me to develop. Is there a piece of software which people find it hard to extract data about into a readable format?

Any ideas would be great! Thanks for your help in advance! Let me know if you have any questions.

James

Gmail format decoding may be one area you can take on.

Look up the recent Webmail forensics post I started. You"ll see a couple of tools mentioned, which do not have the current capability to put Gmail into a more user friendly format.

I can provide samples of Gmail if you endup working on this.

Cheers

Does anyone like these ideas…?

1. Log extractor for the Digsby I.M client to GUI for easy viewing (Digsby handles multiple I.M accounts)
2. Android information extractor
3. Chrome information extractor
4. Safari cache.db files, extracting information

Thanks

I'd say Android could be interesting, although you may have to limit yourself to a certain area as it has the potential to be quite a large undertaking.

Yea, I agree. What area do you think would be best?

A goody, if you wanted to narrow it down even further how about recovery of 'social networking' artefacts
