Do you really think that without your experience with "basic" tools (and related difficulties and the effort to overcome them) you would have now the same level of knowledge?

Yes, I do. For instance, I know people in our field whom I highly respect who have never programmed in DOS. A person doesn't need to know how to program in machine or assembly language in order to program in a high-level language.

Sure, and most of the greatest artists and architects in history never studied art or architecture, what gives?
I was asking about yourself (as you only know what experiences you have/had and how much they contributed to your knowledge), not about people you might know.
I have however to presume that you also know for sure how they (the highly esteemed high level language programmers you know) also never used a command line program with one or two parameters.

Anyway, let's not derail this topic more that it has been, you are perfectly free to suggest to students to buy commercial and professional software as much as I am to suggest instead freeware to them, as a matter of fact this is very good, as the OP and "passers-by" will have more options/choices to choose from D.

As a matter of fact roll , only IF the student passes the exams AND finds a job, not to put down nerdrage, of course.

Ah ha ha, no you are right on point, that about sums up how I feel right now. I think I am doing ok right now though..

I think you just nailed it, I appreciate both yours and marc's suggestions. Although for me now, I am not in a place to afford WinHex and such tools. In the future it is good to know what others are using and which are really cutting times when it comes to investigations. Sometimes you just can't get that for free. But for me now, I am big on Open Source, I am no programmer, but I can get what I need done in perl and python. With command line in combination with my python skills I believe I would be more able to automate large processes and in combination. But then again a lot of the paid for will just do it I am sure. I appreciate all suggestions.

had another thought on suggestions, but I'll leave that for another thread.
