Final Year Project Idea - Software Relevance

Hi All,

I'm an IT/Forensics student starting my research project next semester (this semester ends in a few weeks over here). I've had a look at the topics on this page and I really like the sound of the database reverse engineering stuff.

What I really need to know is which software is still relevant for investigators and if anyone has any suggestions which software would be best (even if it's not in this list). What I really want is a topic that can help move the field forwards. All suggestions are welcome!
