Hi,
Since the GCFA is one of the most popular forensics courses, I was wondering if people on the forum could share their feedback on some of their instructors. Instructors such as Rob Lee are known for being top-notch, but what about the other instructors? Has anyone taken the course with any of the following, and if so, what were your impressions? Thanks.
1. Jess Garcia
2. Jonathan Ham, jham corp.
3. Jess Garcia, One eSecurity
4. Chris Russel, York University
5. Michael Murr, Code-X Technologies
I'm especially interested in feedback on Michael Murr and Chris Russel but feedback on the other instructors will help others on the forum too. Thanks.
I took the 'Next Evolution in Digital Forensics' Course (SEC 526) the other day with Michael Murr and I thought he did a great job covering the material. There were a couple things I wish the class focused on a bit more, but Mike was able to answer all the questions posed to him and did a good job at explaining the topics. Specifically, I would've liked to have seen some more practicals and demonstrations pertaining to memory analysis. The information regarding manually recovering and rebuilding partitions was interesting and definitely good knowledge to have, but it's one of those things I would much rather rely on automated tools for. Still, you can't discount the knowledge of how to perform such feats if you plan on performing a thorough analysis and being able to explain your conclusions in court.
I'll be taking the 508 course (GCFA) with Jonathan Ham beginning tomorrow. I'm a little hesitant right now about exactly how much I'll learn from the course, but Jonathan promised me that he thinks there will be plenty of stuff for me to learn, so I'm going to remain and open and optimistic about it. I'll reply back with my experience once the course is over.

I took SANS 508 back in June with Michael Murr and I thought he was a great teacher. Very informative and engaging. Its hard sometimes to sit through long sessions, but he did a great job at keeping it lively. He has an extensive forensic background and does consultant work at the time of teaching. It was nice to hear from his various experiences. He did an excellent job at answering questions and guiding the students through the exercises.
Thanks guys.
