I have been asked to teach/present an Intro to CF course. There are many of these courses offered and they all pretty much cover the same essentials. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. Have any of you taught any of these courses that would be willing to provide your powerpoint slides. Then I can simply add additional information I see fit as well as my own practicals.

I appreciate the info.

I would recommend you use "Computer Foreniscs for Dummies" as your course book. Well written and just enough for a beginning course.

Besides "Computer Forensics for Dummies" (Which was a great beginners book), I would also recommend "Hacking Exposed Computer Forensics". It was very enjoyable to read.

datacarver, since you are looking at providing your own artifacts you might consider WFA by Harlan or Chad Steel's book on Windows forensics. Much depends on the demographics of your students. Tech savvy students would do better with WFA. Less tech savvy students, the Steel book.

For anyone considering a course but don't have their own artifacts, the Nelson book, THIRD edition, is a way to go since it has practice material. I haven't used the third edition in class so can't speak to any errors that may be in it.

I haven't read the Dummies book so can't express an opinion on it. From the other recommendations, it looks like a real possibility.

I appreciate all references. I'm going to order the books you all suggested to see which ones will provide the best information. After reading reviews of the Nelson book, I appears there are numerous areas that are incorrect.

Do any of these books provide a DVD or download link to actual scenarios other than Nelson's book?

"Computer Forensics Jump Start- Sybex" can be a good option.
I mean, a real Introductory book for Computer Forensics apart from CF for Dummies.

Datacarver,
I use "Computer Forensics Jump Start- Sybex" simply because I co-authored it. If you let me know the course duration, audience, etc. I would be glad to share resources. I'm not partial to powerpoints but have a lot of resources, etc. if you are interested.

I have taught computer forensics for 5 years at Tennessee Technological University and have found both "A Guide to Computer Forensics and Investigations" and "Hacking Exposed - Computer Forensics" to be very good books. This is an intro course directed primarily at junior/senior MIS majors, but students from other disciplines have found it useful. We use The Forensic Tool Kit by AccessData for all hands on work. Both versions 1.81 and 2.2 have worked exceptionally well. Students find it both easy to use and effective. They also offer a very attractive academic alliance program.

I concur, our customer service rep has been reading this book and has learned a good bit about the process. It's an excellent beginner's text.

Yup CF for Dummies is a "must read" to start great lay of the land. The CF Jump Start and then Guide to Computer Forensics and Investigations. Those three really opened me to the whole world of CF.
