I am exploring all options before commiting to URI's grad cert program next Spring. Does anybody know of an online Masters program for Computer Forensics?

Thank you,
Mariesa Limmer

University of Central Florida has a great program, although I am probably considered biased as an alum.

If you spend a few minutes searching this site, you'll find discussions about this topic all over, including the pros of the UCF program.

Also check the education section. Just too much to do this Friday to start providing links to said discussions.

I am in the middle of the UCF program right now and am loving it. They have both the MS and a Grad Cert. The five classes you take towards the grad cert (assuming you are out-of-state) only cost $1,000 per class.

Not only that, but because the entire thing is online, I have been able to land a great computer forensics job, while still taking more classes. What I mean is that I was able to look for a job anywhere and not have to worry about only being able to look for a job in one certain city/area.

Thank you ryanwes21 and congratulations! As I mentioned in my earlier reply, I think I'm going to take a closer look. I've been looking at URI's grad cert program. But would love a Masters…even though I think I've fallen off the deep end. LOL!

I completed the certificate (1/2 of the MS degree) when I lived in Orlando. When the MS became available in 2008, I completed the remainder of the program completely online from South Florida.

As mentioned, the UCF program does do some adjustment for out-of-state for this program, but you'll have to speak with Dr. Lang on that. Good luck and enjoy.

Just a TIP for whichever MS program you choose… when they say you need a linux system, do yourself a favor and setup the SIFT Workstation VM appliance. Besides having some great tools in the package, it is much easier (and more practical) to setup than the often-recommended dual-boot. That is, unless you've already off'd your Windows systems )

There is an Information Assurance Masters program offered by Walsh College (www.walshcollege.edu) that has a 3 separate focuses, 1 being Computer Forensics. It is offered entirely online as well. I am an alum and think the program is well done. It is also recognized by the NSA as a center of excellence program for IA.

Hi Mariesa

Champlain College has a masters in Digital Investigation Management. This is intended for people with a bit of forensic experience who are looking progress their career to the next level. You can find out more here http//extra.champlain.edu/master/msdim/

In the interest of full disclosure I will mention that I am the Program Director for the course.

While I like Champlain College, the cost associated with the programme put it out of reach for a lot of folks (including myself)… a pity, really….

URI and UCF both offer good programs whose only shortfall is that neither University is on the NSA list ( http//www.nsa.gov/ia/academic_outreach/nat_cae/institutions.shtml )…

Also keep in mind that going strictly for a degree in "Forensics" may limit future career choices…

Sadly this program is more centered on the management aspect of forensics rather than a research masters. I believe that the program should be more like the CDF Masters Program in Dublin, where it's not management based. Your not going to get hired as a manager when you have no idea how the real world works….
