As jamie said, getting your foot in the door is the hard part and what company would turn down cheap labour, especially if you have a good non- forensic background? I suspect it wouldn't work for direct LE agencies though.
My personal view is that the industry is starting to grow quite rapidly now. Even a year spent doing a degree is a year not working in the field. You are likely to be more attractive to commercial organisations and maybe even LE agencies with vendor based qualifications, specifically Encase and/ or FTK and demonstrated knowledge/ experience in computing. Once in though I think that an MSc is essential to demonstrate the true in depth knowledge you always knew you had. wink
