Hi. I'm new to the forum and to computer forensics. I am a Law Enforcement Officer in Northeast Ohio and I am looking for any training for computer forensics locally. I have taken all the data recovery classes, but I'm looking to become as educated in the field as possible. Thanks
I would recommend going to SANS.org and get the SANS@HOME course for the GCFA cert. you don't have to get the cert, but the training is good. Or you can do the CCE from home. I have not seen many courses locally anywhere (except if you live in places like Dallas or Chicago) Both courses are exceptional and can provide excellent background to CF.
Where are you located in Northeast Ohio? I am about 20 miles south of Youngstown. I currently am taking Computer forensics classes at Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Which is located in Oakdale PA. About 50 minutes from where I live. Any tips from you as to how I can get into the public sector? I would like to either intern or be employed with law enforcement.
Here are some free training classes for law enforcement officers
I live in Dayton, OH on a military installation and i am trying to get in to computer forensics as well some how. I use to live in Dallas when i didn't know about computer forensics. I am going to start CCE online. There is a local training center for computer classes and they have CHFI training but very costly after the training then you go get the cert.
i wish there were more CF schools around here
Check out compuforensics.com they have two locations in Ohio. I have attended the classes and got a lot out of them.
What I have found with CF training is that travel is usually required ) OPOTA usually sponsers classes at their Richfield location. They invite Accessdata, Encase, MobileForensics, etc. to that facility. I have attended several there. Also Mason, Ohio (town Kings Island is in) has been hosting alot of NW3C training which is ALWAYS free to LE (except hotel, food, travel). They seem to like Indianapolis too.
There is a TON of training available in Ohio. I would search all the major commecial software companies, NW3C, OPOTA, SEARCH. If you need a LE CF in Ohio, always feel free to get ahold of me.
I would suggest joining a local chapter of HTCIA (High Technology Crime Investigation Association).
This is an International organization with chapters located around the world. You join a local chapter to become a member. The membership is made-up of Both LE and Security Professionals of all types, and fairly recently they have added College Student membership to the organization. The membership usually is made up of individuals that work in LE around 60% and in the Private sector around 40%.
The dues are really reasonable for most persons who would be considering membership. Reasonable in fact, where you will be able to attend a couple to a few of the training programs that are scheduled during the year and maybe also attend the International Annual Conference, too. Some Chapters also put on a local regional conference with other nearby chapters and these are usually very cost effective and grow the number and type of training for a person's interest.
If you find that there is not a chapter within your desired area. Look to see at the International's Website, if there is a chapter close enough to attend some events. A list of the chapters is accessible. I would suggest attending some of their events because they are usually about subjects of the most current interest and are very informative and NOT a vendor's marketing event.
I suggest this approach because you see, you need to have two (2) persons who are members willing to vouch for you and sign your membership form.
Here are some links to the International and other chapters in the MidWest area and surrounding area besides outside the USA

Go and Human network with others in the field and see, meet others, and experience learning of the field. I feel you will not regret the choice.
So for Ohio related training contact the Ohio Chapter for training they sponsor or know about.
