Sumit,

I too went into my MSc with hardly any knowledge of programming or writing scripts. The way I got around it was to read, read & read more and learn the skills I needed to be competent in the subject. I hadn't studied maths for …ahem… quite a few years! The outcome of your course is purely built on how much you put into it and the harsh reality is burning the midnight oil and learning….. )

As well as your supervisor, have you tried approaching potential recruiters to see what they might be interested in & indeed if there is something specific that they could do with free research on ? It makes for a very good interview if you can discuss a topic of interest to both sides, and demonstrates your potential value to a given organisation.

Incidentally, given your stated preferences, you might do well to make early contact with potential employers as the clearance process can take some time, they might also make some suggestions about how much you should discuss your career choice in open forums 😉

Jamie - thanks for your suggestion..

I have bachelor in computer application and i lost interest in programming in my first of degree and then never tried to learn it.

i worked with US based helpdesk in india and worked on microsoft outlook and windows xp .

my classmates are also facing the same , as it was told to us ,, no programming or mathematics is needed in this Master program

well what if i do dissertation in ENCASE or FTK.

can you recommend me some books or articles related to it.. because this is what i thought all day and night…

i cant found any pdf documents or ebooks on the internet to learn about them and can start my dissertation..

Anyone can advise me .. please please please

Ah, I suppose the first question would be "Do you have indefinite leave to remain in the UK ?", companies _may_ sponsor a work visa for an exceptional candidate, but in general it is easier to employ someone where there is no issue of that.

Then, I guess, you are going to have to do some homework, find the details of companies and organisations doing forensic work, phone them and ask to speak to the HR department.

Intelligence is going to be your home country only (India ?), and, they may not be happy with the fact that you will have spent significant time outside of your home country - usually anthing more than 6 months in a year is questionable.

Hey Azarel,

I will get 2years extension once i finish my Masters by April 2011. So i think they wont question me.. if i understood your message. please advise if i was wrong.

From younger days i am interested to join FBI or any international Intelligence Agency…

I cant be a part of Interpol because i am Indian (

I came England to do this Masters and get some international experience but dont think its going on the right track.. i am very upset about it..

You did understand my point, but you have to bear in mind that two years really isn't a very long time - not particularly in business where they may well invest significant amounts in your training only to have you leave. Obviously this is a risk for any employee, but in your case you have no choice in the matter at all ! It does, however, remove the initial issue.

I'd be _very_ suprised if you were able to join anything other than Indian intelligence agencies ( http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_Intelligence_agencies) all that I am aware of have nationality as a miniumum requirement, and that tends not to extend to naturalised citizens. This isn't to say that you can't work for a foreign government, or that you wouldn't be able to attain a certain level of security clearance - just intellegence work tends to be a bit more picky … Even marriage to a non-UK national can be prohibitive for an applicant for Intelligence work.

I'm sorry to hear that you don't feel that it's going well. It does strike me that you were somewhat misled by your University regarding course content - to me programming and mathematics are fundamental to any computer course, at least some skills in each. It shouldn't, however, be impossible to come up with a dissertation that doesn't involve programming and does just make use of EnCase or FTK, although I'd be hard pressed to remove all maths from the equation ! You are going to want to take a look at an application that is new, and that little analysis has been done on before, and see what it is that it does, what evidental artefacts that it leaves etc. Choose something that either (a) builds on existing knowledge ( e.g. Outlook 2010 over Outlook 2008 ) or (b) is new as a whole [and might have some sensible use in a criminal environment] say a new p2p or VOIP application ?

Sumit, Just a little word of advice about finding work here in the UK. I am a British Citizen but I grew up in Australia and only moved to the UK just over three years ago. Until I was living here for three years I was unable to work for any Police force or company that did outsourced work for a Police force. In order to get in to any intelligence organisation or be granted a security clearance for higher level government work I will need to live here for ten years continually (not live in another country in between) first.

So, Basically
- Live in the UK for three years before you can work in Law Enforcement
- Live in the UK for 10 years before you can work in Intelligence

No-one told me these things before I arrived so I hope this helps. )
