During the last part of your preparation, you will have /should have many weeks of training for your dissertation process.

Unfortunately things have 'changed' and many supervisors are not that much help in finding a subject that interests you, they do it for subjects that interest them and meet their research goals.

I can recommend

Dawson, W.C. (2005) Projects in Computing and Information Systems A Students Guide. Harlow, Essex, EnglandAddison Wesley, pp. 253. ISBN 0-321-26355-3

it is a VERY good dissertation book, I thought the best book from the whole of my MSc course.

1.That said finding a dissertation subject is remarkably easy, the key requirement is that it does not need to be 'new' work.
That is to say you can take the work done by another dissertation and review/ analyze it in a different manner as long as you bring your own thoughts on the matter
2. ANY input you receive on your dissertation you MUST acknowledge, so if anyone on this lists gives you an Idea or helps you in ANY way, you need to acknowledge their role, failure to do so is plagiarism, for which you will fail, you will NOT be marked down for acknowledging such sources.

3. The absolute best way to find a subject is to go for long walks, during which time you 'review' the material in your head.
Choose a SINGLE strong area
Networking
Multimedia
Programming
Operating systems.
Whatever

I chose hardware write blockers…. , many people think hardware write blockers completely block, but actually they DONT really exert that much control.

My dissertation was on 'indicating' that write blockers are actually a 'black-box' between two other black boxes (the computer, the device being examined).

As an argument in logic, since you cannot 'see' inside a black box, you cannot control its behavior(think Schrödinger's cat), that was the basis for my dissertation.

Even by thinking through this simplistic argument I ended up with about 8 different dissertation subjects to choose from, and that in its self opens wide the field of research on 'software write blockers'

So there you go …… absolutely tons of help.

Finding a job anywhere at the moment is, it seems, quite a challenge for Graduates and Post-Graduates. You aren't the only person that I know that is concerned. I'd suggest that you work a lot on your CV, emphasise the experience that you have that is relevant to compliance & quality - be that in your previous employment, or from your MSc - and get it out to employers. You might do quite well to see if you can get into one of the graduate schemes of the larger organisations - try http//www.milkround.com/ as well as the usual JobServe etc. When you have finished your dissertation, if you find yourself temporarily seeking employment, don't waste the time - try and get some professional qualifications that will help your application - for Security work try CISSP, CISA, CISM - for quality stuff perhaps ISO9001 Lead Auditor, or more specifically for IT ISO 20000 or InfoSec 27001. Don't wait until you have finished though - I'd get your CV out as quickly as possible to as wide a field as possible - you can always turn down a job offer 😉

I don't really see what a dissertation on disk geometry would provide and how it would show 'learning' or accomplishment.

A dissertation is not just about documenting something you find interesting, you have to 'extend' , the subject matter and show some sort of thought process that adds knowledge, same for file systems, unless it was an analysis of the different types and a proposal for improvement/ design of a new one.

Personally I would go for something like "The effect of malware on the forensic process"
specifically from the perspective of malware being on the examiners system.
possibly related to 'software' write-blockers, with a 'virus' that tampers with the disk vectors blocked by the 'software' write blocker.
In effect taking the 'software' write-blocker offline during the forensic process, or a 'virus' that scrambles the disk IO by XOR ing the data received back, if you could 'fox' encase or another forensic product, showing they failed to ensure the path between the software and the extraction device was secured /validate, then you would have one hell of a dissertation.

This should be possible , since SW write-blockers intercept the disk functions.

Sumit,

The longer this thread goes on I think the clearer it is you really need to sit down with someone at Derby who knows you better than we do and see if between you you can come up with something which plays to your strengths. I don't mean to be unhelpful but going further down this road in a public forum is probably not going to get you much further forward - I think it's clear that you need some broader guidance which (ideally) your university is best placed to give you.
