I'm not going to school for this stuff, but I would like to offer it as part of my business plan. I will have to learn it on my own.

I have a question about AccessData. I have a copy of it. Am I required to run Oracle in the background in order to operate this program?

Maybe that's the wrong question to be asking, but if you know more than I do about this program, please respond and set me on the right track.

Suggestions?

Oracle is an integral component of FTK2 & 3. Did you follow the install instructions? Should set up the basics for you.

Well, to practice using this, I'm running it off a Windows Vista machine.

Should I run this off a virtual server, or actual server?

It doesn't have to be a server. Any high-end PC will be fine whether running a Windows Server OS or a Windows PC OS.

I highly recommend against virtualising your DB because your performance will suffer.

^^^What Patrick said. Also no need to run the database on a separate machine unless you are dealing with really big cases or have multiple machines using the same database.

Forgot to mention. If you haven't done so already, read the recommended configuration information from AD at http//www.accessdata.com/downloads/media/FTK_3_SystemSpecificationsGuide.pdf and based on my own experience, if you want to really reduce processing time and responsiveness, put your DB on an SSD and your image file on a RAID. I recently went from RAID_DB + RAID_Image (2 separate RAIDs) to SSD_DB (+ RAID_Image) and was majorly impressed by the improved responsiveness when for example I did full case expansion on over 1 million items and it came up really fast.

And in case you're looking for a recommendation on an SSD drive, consider anything with a Sandforce controller. Intel is no longer the king of the hill, but I doubt they'll let it stay that way for long.

I'm going to try and use this tool as a service to my customers. I normally do data recovery using SATA/IDE cables, but people have been asking for deleted emails, pics and so forth.

So, I'd like to run it off my laptop. Do you think that should be okay, or will it run too heavy for a laptop?

What do you think I should charge?

Does your laptop meet the specs in the document referenced by Patrick4n6? Just like Windows, you can probably get it to run on equipment that does not meet the minimum specs. How well it runs is a different issue.

What do you think I should charge?

What are other local firms charging? Are you going to perform CF or is this just a more specialized version of data recovery?

Also, if you are going to be doing CF make sure your attorney checks local laws regarding PI licensing.

..don't use FTK v2… it's bugged and bad.. 3.2 is rather stable though (prior to that, 1.81.6 for example, doesn't require a db at all).
