Dear digital forensics community,

I need some opinions, hopefully someone can help me!

I've been working for 7+ years now in information security, and about 2 years ago I discovered the fascinating world of digital forensics. As I was (and still am) getting tired of general information security, I decided to specialise and try to make a move into the forensics field. To get a solid foundation, I started my Masters of Digital Forensics at Edith Cowan University (while also working full-time), and graduated last summer. Next, I thought that often there are discussions as to what is more important a degree or certifications. So I decided to go for both, and took pretty much all EnCase training classes and became EnCE certified. Shortly after, I also got the CHFI certification. Besides these things, I keep my knowledge up to date by reading a lot on the subject (books, papers, articles, anything).

Now, my problem is as follows. I think I am ready to make my move, and get a job in digital forensics. However, the issue is that most potential employers require their examiners to have experience, which is the only thing I lack, and won't even give me a chance for a job interview. A second issue is that I currently live in Belgium, and on the market here is very little interest for forensics, much less than UK or US for example. So I decided, well, ok, then I'll just relocate if I can find a job abroad. Again, problem, most examiners in the US need security clearance, which I cannot get because I'm not a citizen.

So, I'm looking for ideas and opinions on how I best proceed now. Any specific knowledge I should build up that employers really need, any other certifications or degrees I should take, or really anything that could help to get me started in forensics. I'm out of ideas )

Thank you all in advance,
Kind regards,

Merdle
