I want to move into the field of computer forensics, but wanted to find out which is the best career path to take. I currently have 10yrs experience working in corporate IT, I am a network and desktop support analyst.
I have looked at the school here in chicago, that offers a BA degree in computer forensics, but I am having a hard time finding money to go back to school. I thought about saving my own money and studying for it on my own. I looked at the network security and the certified computer examiner certification programs.
What is the best approach to accomplishing my goals. lol
What school in Chicago was under your consideration? I have 20+ years of IT experience and was downsized a year ago. I always had an interest in computer forensics and in January 2009 prior to being laid off I had started studying for my certificate in Computer Forensics & Digital Investigations (CF&DI) at Champlain College in Burlington, VT.
The study mode is online. The bulk of their courses are on a seven-week accelerated basis which is very demanding, but if you're committed to your cause you'll maintain your focus and self-discipline to study and learn. Here's the link for the professional continuing studies (CPS) at Champlain College. Check it out. It contains alot of useful information.

Look for Computer Forensics & Digital Investigations under the Technology heading. Let me know if you need anything else. I hope this helps and good luck.

School is good, but so can practical training with industry recognized certs.
SANS GCFA
Guidance Software EnCE ( Year of training including online for about 5000) which could lead to their cert
Not trying to discourage school but with technical experience and then forensic training that might assist landing a job in the mean time.
I am in Chicago so contact me if you have any questions.
Assuming you already have a BS in Computer Science or MIS don't get one in CF- I definitely agree with rwuiuc. Save the money, get some training / certs, and network like crazy.
A two year CF degree might be worth it if it is affordable. Also could be a great substitution for training if you can't find anything worth while in your area.
