As many of you know, I have recently obtained by GCFA. I have been talking to a PI's and Attorneys that work for some larger firms who are in need of Computer Forensic consultant.
My consulting business is going to consist of Data Recovery (Home users, mainly as well as some business). In addition, I will be looking to perform forensics work for local & distant attorneys as well.
This will not be my primary job but I will be able to put a lot of time into this.
What do you suggest for software if performing both data recovery as well as Forensics when needed?
I currently use a lot of the open source software that was incorporated into the SANS courses as well as many other products I have found as recommendations on here. I would like to automate the process to speed the process up.
I would be practiing here in the midwest.

Well then, I won't bother listing my favorite open-source tools. They're probably on your list.
I *do* recommend a very affordable data-recovery utility,
I am in the same boat as you so I have been looking around and testing different software. CNW Recovery looks good for data recovery and imaging. I also like WinHex. I have only used the trial version, but to me it feels similar to the high dollar forensic software. The full versions of CNW Recovery and WinHex are both inexpensive. If you find another good piece of inexpensive software please PM me.
You wont make much money just having a software solution, everyone and their brother has copies of software solutions.
You need hardware solutions, and remembering that you are not going to spend much money, ACDRE and Salvation Data are out of the question.
In addition to a solution, I think you need some data recovery training. A lot of people think they don't need training, but you will be up against people who do have it and who do have the hardware solutions.
Thanks for your input, I'll check into it
Greetings,
I just talked to a local (Central Illinois) firm that offers in house data recovery services and are also an authorized Drive Savers reseller. If they can't handle stuff in house, the sell the Drive Savers service. That might be an option for you to consider.

Awesome Kovar thank you!
The problem with that idea is that he would have to take for example a typical drive savers price of $1475 and way UP, and add his shipping to that, add 2-5 days shipping both ways, and then put in a profit margin.
People now adays don't spend the money like they used to for data recovery solutions.
He's looking to get in on the cheap also so that further makes the issue difficult.
Some clean rooms will offer a 10% discount which could be your profit margin, but $147 on a job and you eat shipping one way (usually more expensive because you have to add a hard drive to the weight of the package) and it's not worth it anymore.
Forgot to add that they usually add their own stickers to the hard drive (which are incredibly hard to get off) so when a customer calls you and asks if you have in house facilities to handle physical failures and you say yes, then they see 800-440-1904 and DRIVE SAVERS on the drive then it's hard to get that business again or a referral.
Very good point Armresl, thanks again for the input….
