I am mature student seeking an Computer Forensics work placement in order to gain valuable industry related experience, as statistics show that students that complete an industrial placement are 6 times as likely to achieve employment on graduation.
I have recently completed the second year of the BSC (hons) Computer forensics course at the University of Glamorgan. I am due to graduate in 2015, and strive to achieve either a 2.1 or a 1st.
I have a keen interest in Computer Forensics and I wish to continue my development by obtaining a Masters in the field. I am familiar with MAC, Unix & Windows operating systems and understand the importance of evidential integrity, thorough analysis, data mining and data recovery. I have also completed Court room training provided by Bond Solon. Currently I maintain an average grade of 21 throughout the majority of modules studied.
In addition to the skills gained through university I am also seeking external independent qualifications, such as; Access Data certified forensic examiner (A.C.E) & CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
Due to having served in the Armed forces I am extremely punctual, reliable, analytical, professional, hard working and I am always looking to further my knowledge base and to gain valuable industry based experience. I work well as part of a team and I am able to use my own initiative. My prospective employer will not be disappointed!

Hi Davies259,
I am also studying this course at the University of Glamorgan, I am just heading into my second year.
How did you find your second year? I would be interested to know the sort of things that you covered during the year, what you felt was good and bad about the course?
I'm looking forward to getting into the modules ESP. The forensics and courtroom work.
Did you cover much networking this year also, following the CCNA programme?
Sorry about all the questions, would be great to hear from a fellow student about what the future holds )
Thanks
James

Hi James,
I found the second year a lot more challenging than the first, but having said that it was a lot more interesting too.
In the second year we covered Operating Systems (Linux, Cloud Computing, Networks), Computer System Security (ISMS management and implementation, System logs, Python, etc), Software Development (C#, Design patterns etc), Cryptography & Information Assurance (Lots of Maths), Forensic Digital Evidence (MAC Analysis, Windows Artifacts etc), Team Project Evidential Practice (Expert Witness Reports, Court Room Training).
There is also an opportunity to gain ACE (Access Data certification) at the end of the second year.
I didn't really think that there were any bad bits to the course. The ISO 27000 series can be a bit tedious, but other than that it was great. The best advice I can give you is work hard and don't wait till the deadlines before handing in your work, because you'll have plenty to be getting on with!
Hope that helps
Matt
Thanks for the info Matt )
How have you found trying to get a placement?
I am on the sandwich course and looking at completing my 3rd year in the industry.
Managed to get some work experience at a company in London for a couple of weeks before the end of Summer but that is about it at the moment.
Are you looking at specialising in anything in particular, such as the programming or cryptography?
Cheers

Hi James,
I have applied for several placements and have had a few interviews. I have been unsuccessful in getting a placement but I have been placed on the reserve list several times. I always seem to get second place, so I have since decided to return to uni for the 3rd year and to complete the inter grated masters in Computer Security. Mainly because it widens my employment prospects. Also the Msc in Computer Forensics is not designed for those whom have completed the Bsc (Hons). A few of my friends have had better luck and are undertaking a placement.
In the 3rd year you can choose two modules, I have gone for Computer Security & Administration and Networks as I believe they are the most relevant. Sadly Programming and Crypto are not an option for 3rd year forensics students. Which is a shame really because I've taken to programming like a duck to water. Even writing a program to convert P-list (MAC) seconds into an accurate date in my spare time.
For my third year project I am doing triage tools for embedded systems.
What about yourself? What do you make of the course so far and how are you finding it? What part of Forensics interests you? and what is your career goal?
Cheers Matt
Well i wish you luck in finding something for the future ), that's the part i'm not looking forward to, trying to find somewhere to work.
I am enjoying the course so far, the tutors are good at their modules, they know what they are talking about and if we have any questions, they are very good at answering them or pointing us in the right direction.
I am really interested in the forensic investigations and networking modules and looking forward to completing them in more depth this year. Programming wasn't my strongest module and is one of the ones that i struggled with but hoping that i will get better with that over time (i haven't done any prior to uni as I didn't study computing at college, mine was ICT).
Career wise i would like to work in the forensic/police sector(s) so investigating machines for cases etc… as I find all that quite interesting. Either that or as a network engineer of some kind although that is more a fall back really.
If you are able to it would be great to maybe arrange a time to meet when we are back at Uni, put a face to a name and get to chat a little more about all this.
If you're interested, drop me a message and I will give you my contact details.
Cheers
James
