In a couple of hours I have a phone interview with a senior forensic examiner for a position as a Digital Evidence Tech. The position was posted as entry level and I had an interview with HR (after that, my resume was sent to the hiring manager). I have a technical background and currently work as a NOC/Helpdesk Tech as well as have a BS in Computer and Security Technology. I did take a course in forensics, but it was all theory and I took it about 4 or 5 years ago. Hopefully I don't blow it!

Ha, it's in my nature and is a moral imperative that I steal (or attempt to steal) Christmas each year. Unlike the other wimp, my heart stays two sizes too small. On a happier note, I finished the interview and I am moving onto the next step! It went really well and they really liked the skill set that I have. They did warn that this is evidence collection only, another group handles examining and another group works on presenting the data. I explained that I am fine with that and was looking to not only break into the field, but also learn as much as I can. Off to the races!

For me to waste even a year of my life I'd have to be guaranteed if I met a certain goal that I could move up, training would be paid for, etc.

You're new, so you have no idea how they use evidence collection people. There's a reason they are always hiring them. It's thankless work, you never get to progress. Think about it, you progress by showing you good you are, how can you show how good you are at collections only? I shaved 4 seconds off my collection record?

IMHO if I had to rewind all these years and there was an offer for evidence collection, or to start a private company, I'd still go with the uncertain private company, for numerous reasons.

best of luck to you.

hey Grinch,
That's great news for you. Congrats and Good luck - sounds like this is a position with Kroll? (seen some postings) Regardless of what is 'best' for others - keep your focus on what is best for YOU. it seems that this field is nearly impossible to break into unless you're LE or military or "I was imaging drives back when they were all punch card or hand written" - that's a joke guys. Keep your eye on the ball…..
Would like to hear about how it all goes for you so maybe an update to your thread?
