Hi everyone,
I'm currently in college, working toward a Computer Info System & Security degree with a focus on Digital Forensics. I am just starting out and have a couple questions I hope someone can answer for me
- Whether one is employed through LE or a private company, how are social networking sites viewed within this field–such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter? Does LE discourage having personal profiles? Would a private company?
- How are blogs, podcast, and vodcasts used within a Computer Forensics Investigative career within LE and private companies?
I realize that this website offers a plethora of information; however, does LE have their own in order to share information with each other?
Any information given is appreciated! I am in the process of a writing assignment and can't really seem to find any information through google that most accurately answers these questions. Thank you! Very Happy
Hi and welcome.
Personally from my own experience (and I am working LE about 3 weeks) is that facebook is still allowed, but we were told specifically not to discuss openly on status updates or walls what you do and or any specific details. e.g., you might say to you friends I do computer forensics for the police, but leave it at that. No other info, details etc… you never know who's looking. I suppose there is no harm in saying you work for the police… I mean, there are thousands of police and police staff out there, so that information is of no relevance, just don't divulge extensive details.
I do remember reading somewhere not long ago about an MI5 / MI6 (can't remember) person putting details of stuff on their facebook and consequently was sacked and everybody had access removed (or something on those lines) was a wee while ago, but was in the papers…. try google'ing it.
As for blogs and twitter etc, I'd says its similar. Actually, thinking about it, blogs might be different. I'd say that would be the kind of thing at discretion of management. Maybe if you tell them you are keeping a blog, but you will ensure all posts will go though them to verify no sensitive data is being exposed you might be OK!
Let us know if you have a blog and send us a link D
Thank you so much! This is greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, I do not have a blog, but maybe one day! D
