Hi,
First time post here, so please be nice wink
I am currently studying a Bsc computer science with a specialization in software engineering.
my question is this, is there posistions in the computer forensics departments for specialist software engineers.
my degree is 4 years long with a years work experince, from read some posts i believe it is difficult to get a work placement in CF, would any of you have any other work placement sugguestions.
also as you can tell i am very software based, so do you have any book recommends for software CF?
also would anyone be able to suggest anything software i can download and start learning to use and anything i could try and do on my own network and computers using this software.
Thank you very much for your time and any help you can give.
Take care

Few, if any, within computer forensic organisations. Positions within firms developing forensic software, more likely.
I do believe there'll be a percentage who have or had the title Software Engineer on their CV at some point however. Some made the transition from SE to CFE through their computer security shop where they began having to do HR violation or incident response investigations. I can think of a couple of folks in that category.
Many examiners have no software background, mostly coming through LE. The investigative skills are often the harder to develop so there are those folks who say it's easier to train an investigator to use software than to teach a software person to become an investigator. Not to say it can't be done, it's just harder.
Prehaps some of the other folks can share their background and thoughts.
