Hi there I am a first year student studying Computer Forensics and I am on the look out for a summer placement at hopefully a forensics company offering me the opportunity to experience a lab setting before my placement year.

If anybody has any details of companies offering a summer internship or are looking for someone to take on in either the Cambridge or Manchester area could you contact me and I will happily send a copy of my CV.

Thanks in advance,

Tom.

Hi Tom,

Firstly, well done on being so forward thinking about your course- getting some experience is always going to win you "brownie" points with employers, however, I'm not sure how many companies you will find who will take you on. As a rule of thumb at the minute its not an easy industry to be and students within the industry wanting to get placement years and summer jobs are finding it difficult.

I know from my course at university that only 5 of us (out of like 30) got a placement year, and I think its the same across the country. If you are willing to do unpaid work then you might get a job doing basic stuff but I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding anything paid or indeed doing anything especially forensically related as most companies wont let you near casework or live cases before you've been properly trained (which can take years!)

Good luck anyways and let us all know if you come up with anything

I agree with you, CFUNN, that it is difficult to get a placement in this area - especially this year. However, Tom, don't give up hope even this week I was contacted by a company looking for somebody to take on for a placement year so the opportunities are out there…..

The key, as always, is - as I have said in other postings - to ensure your CV is outstanding and then to target decision makers in the right way.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

David.

Hi Tom,

I am currently a second year student returning to my final year in September after my placement year.

Summer work is hard to get within forensics, but if you are willing to expand your skill set and move a little away from hard line forensics try out some of the data recovery companies.
Data Recovery work is closely related to forensics without the security clearance issues, and if you get some physical drive repair skills under your belt, bully for you.

I'm also pretty sure GCHQ run a summer placement scheme that spans 6 weeks. It's not strictly forensics but it always looks nice on your CV.

Good luck hunting.

Hi N1XY,

Maybe it would help some of the other people here looking for placements if you could outline how you managed to secure your placement?

How was the placement - as you expected it to be?

David.

Hey David,

I would be happy to help others, I am fortunate enought to attend a university that has a work placements department, so I get a lot of help myself.

My placement was as I expected due to the fact I ran my own company. Being a Data Recovery company I have a couple of good ties into that industry and know it is very useful for Forensic students.

If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me, I will gladly help if I can. I tend to spend some time on these forums so I will look out for placement threads and try to contribute.

Regards,
N1XY

Glad to hear you have been successful, if you don't mind my asking, where have you successfully managed to secure your summer placement?

Congratulations,
