'The one year plan'

Hello,

I wanted to ask you for advice on creating a 'one year plan'… but first let me tell you about me.

I have recently completed my placement year, during this year I worked on a helpdesk, which wasn't my ideal placement as I'm on a Forensic Computing course, however having researched this I have tried to see the upsides which many of you talk about in other forums and I believe I made the most of it… As I knew this wasn't the best thing to have on my CV I was lucky enough to gain an internship with a forensics company who are quite small, meaning it's very hands on, Great! Although unpaid I'm sure the few months here will outweigh the few pounds I could have earned.

Currently I am trying to put together a plan for the coming year, which is my final year on my BSc, within a few months I imagine my job searching and applications to be at a high level, I know I need to be 'interesting' and 'different' but what makes someone these to you? I am in contact with an employment agency who specialise in this sector to try and get my CV to the standard it should be, I am very thankful for their willingness to help me, as I would be yours.

Why do you think you need to be interesting and different, specially in digital forensics?

What is the incentive for a contingency recruiter to take care of you ( as opposed to a retained recruiter)?

Hi,

By 'interesting' and 'different' I mean stand out, so different from everyone else who will be hoping to gain a particular job, for example a blog is something I am currently working on.

Good question, as it is work in progress, when I know the answer, I will feed it back to you.

I guess stuff like this is what I'm probably seeking advice on…

I can only imagine what a recruiter is seeking, whereas members on here can advise me better.

Since you seem wide open to suggestions, here's one pick an emerging specialty and become an authority on it. For example, Cloud Forensics. Immerse yourself and write blog posts on how you successively approximate "forensically sound" acquisitions from one host after another. For example, Google Docs, DropBox, Facebook, Twitter. Hopefully you're a good programmer or you can team up with one or two. These acquisitions almost certainly need to use the respective APIs for these services, in order to capture whatever metadata is available, and you'll probably want to add authentication features to your code (e.g., hash by tweet).

Or you could just focus on Windows 8. )
