Hello new guy here…from Maine..
I have been working personally with computers since 1998, started out by teach myself web design and then formating by manually entering sectors. I then started tearing apart computers and building my own systems.
I have taken formal classes in web development, computer repair and Comptia Network + also MCDST
I have placed at the top of each class, and was helping other students while in class
I am not great at math though, I can do basic math and I feel this could be a weakness? I could trace people, create havoc on end users, but I never did anything that could get me into alot of trouble. Clean record, love law and computers. What would you recommend I start with? And is college really necessary for this field?
Can you learn the math you may need?
Lots of people aren't great in one area or another. The question you should ask yourself is, "can I learn the math (or any other skill)?
What would you recommend I start with?
What are you doing for a living now?
And is college really necessary for this field?
Not in the sense of a MD or attorney.
Can I learn the math…maybe
What I do for a living? Pest Control
Can I learn a skill well I know car repair, carpentry, computer skills, painting, gardening, small engine repair, I also won 2 hearings, found a legal loophole, web design, graphic design, had to pass exam to get pesticide applicator license
Good at analyzing situations, coming to a solution
Not that it matters, took a career aptitude test said web design, programmer, CEO ..high on analytical
You do not need college to take the bar exam here in Maine..
If you know you are weak in math, you will just have to muster the strength to chip away at it until you learn what you need. It's doable.
I asked what you do now because there are basically two avenues for entry; law enforcement or corporate. I think that most here would agree that the biggest barrier to entry is experience, particularly on the corporate side. If you worked in a job where you can start taking on IT functions, it might help with that.
I think it will be hard to enter without a career change to get experience, even if you were to get some kind of training.
Back to your question of whether you would be good in the field, that's knd of subjective. I think that if you are generally inquisitive, can learn new sills, and keep up with the technology, you might do fine.
Maine is not the best place for IT positions, I was thinking about opening a computer repair shop after the season to leave me some time to study on the side. I do not think math should be all that bad, my problem was I only did one year of middle school and I was off to high school because of my intelligence and quick learning. However a lot of core mathematics was skipped also, therefore I am lacking.
Funny thing is, I can not read a ruler except for the known inch, half inch etc..But my drafting is excellent and I excelled past everyone in class.
What are we talking for math skills anyway?
You said that you thought math could be a weakness. As long as you can learn what you must know, it won't be an issue.
