Hi everyone,

New to the forum and I hope to get some advise from you. Since a few weeks I am looking into these courses GCFA (GIAC), Certified Computer Forensics Examiner (CCFE), Certified Data Recovery Professional (CDRP) and Certified Penetration Tester (CPT). When looking for the training to do these the costs are wildly high. (Champlain, where i just wanted a quote, spammed me for weeks by trying to have me sign up to their $11.000 course which lasted only a few weeks). I have to pay for it by myself. Currently I am abroad and would need to do the course material online. GIAC was quoting over $5000 for the online material (not even live) for 70 hrs of training. That is way over my budget. Does anyone have any advise on how I can do the training within a tighter budget? Thanks a million!

Hello!

What is it you want to do? I see some of those certs and courses are 'traditional' forensics and others are more penetration testing - what would you prefer to study?

If you're just looking to get into the swing of things, there are a few options which are either free or relatively cheap.

First of all, Programming for Everybody is a free online course for learning Python, a language which is used more and more frequently in DFIR. After that, there are a couple of nice books you can buy (why hello there) for a decent price to get you into DFIR-related scripting.

For 'trad' forensics, The Sleuth Kit (and it's GUI, autopsy) is an open source set of forensic tools. Here is a list of books which mention it. And if you want to use Autopsy, then this wiki page has you covered. It even lets you write custom modules in - you guessed it - Python.

For pentesting and the more "indecent-responsey" side of DFIR, you have these options.
http//www.opensecuritytraining.info/ has a range of free materials you can download and go through. I don't know how good they are, but hey - they are free. And you can learn Assembler! How exciting. )
Metasploit Unleashed is a free online textbook about how to use Metasploit, an extremely popular (and free) exploit framework. It is written by the folks at Offensive Security, who release Kali Linux (which is free) - and in fact they do an online course on Penetration Testing with Kali Linux. It's not free ($800 to $1150) but it's considerably cheaper than pretty much any other online course you can do.
If you're feeling super confident in your skills you can also do their OSCP certification, which I gather is highly regarded in some quarters - again, it's not free, but it is relatively cheap.

Of course, I haven't covered everything but that bunch is good for starters I think..?

Good luck! And report back with how you got on.
