Hi all,

I've had a report of at least one user seeing 100% CPU utilization when using IE7 to view Forensic Focus. Having looked into things I don't think this is a malware issue, it's most likely an IE7 problem. Can anyone confirm whether or not they're seeing the same thing when viewing with IE7 (or indeed seeing it with any other browser)? Many thanks!

Jamie

Confirmed.. With XP SP2. I'm not sure if it was patch Tuesday last night or not.

Note processor is only maxed when IE window is the primary focus.

Processes the IE7 is using.

ntkrnlpa.exe+0x69c02
win32k.sys+0x2f70
win32k.sys+0x3776
win32k.sys+0x3793
ntdll.dll!KiFastSystemCallRet
kernel32.dll!GetModuleFileNameA+0x1b4

Machine
AMD 3200+ 1.99GHz

The 100% CPU utilization I see is site specific and not general to every site.

Many thanks, everyone.

A little bit of Googling reveals a variety of possible IE7 related issues and fixes for this problem. I'm not able to test any of them myself at the moment (I'm out of town) but if anyone fancies running through one or both of the following fixes and reporting back I'd be very grateful

- Disable the phishing filter

1. Start Internet Explorer 7.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Disable Phishing Filter in the Settings list.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
5. Restart Internet Explorer 7.

If that works and you want to re-enable the filter there's an update here http//support.microsoft.com/kb/928089/en-us

- Reset Internet Explorer Settings

See http//support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 - caution I believe this may clear any AutoComplete data

Cheers,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

None of those change it for me - Disabling Phishing filter, installing that patch or resetting IE.

Thankfully, I use FireFox.

I can also confirm that it's not any of the add-ons. I disabled all of them and still had high utilization.

Could someone check the forums index page - http//www.forensicfocus.com/computer-forensics-forums - and let me know if this problem appears there as well (it's one of the few pages without the javascript for ad delivery)? It might be best to check it directly from a restarted IE7 or at least from another site where you're not seeing the processor already running at 100% (i.e. not from another page at Forensic Focus). Many thanks in advance!
