The 27 terabytes Watkins held dwarfed the data storage held by South Wales Police, which has 2,862 officers and 1,631 support staff.

When I read that, I thought it meant 27TB of storage, not IIC material.
Yes but conflicts with the first paragraph
"his collection of child abuse photos and films amounted to data almost five times the size of the police force that arrested him."
Sloppy journalism I guess. Anyway even if its only 25%/6.75TB of the perps storage isn't this still a record amount for one individual?
It would be very interesting to know the actual facts. Is 27TB just the total capacity? Does it include the cloud storage which was examined? Apparently Watkins was "addicted" to filming himself having sex, so was that part of this 27TB?
All I can get is from the sentencing guidelines
Count 31 relates to about 90 indecent photos of children. They include 45 at
level 4 and 2 at level 5. The age range of the children is from 2 to 14 years.
Count 32 involves images and videos of extreme pornography. There are 22
images of bestiality including oral and vaginal sex with dogs.

Think you are right re filming himself. Its likely too that as he was a wealthy pop star he might of had a home studio possibly recording at 2k or 4k so his own video files could be huge.

My reading of the article (which does seem to contradict itself) was that it was 27TB of total storage seized from him.
If it was 27TB of CP, I think that would be more than went through my entire office (of 10 full-time analysts in a Police force responsible for almost 6 million people) in the 5 years I was working in the area.
Still, to analyse 27TB of data would take enormous effort for any police force - and in a case like this (with identifiable victims potentially still in real danger), you wouldn't want to miss anything! Sounds like great work from the South Wales Police!

Agreed.
I'm curious in what type of encryption he was using.
