I was hoping to get help on a couple of questions related to a Limewire investigation. The object of the investigation claims that no one could have downloaded files from his computer because he set the "Uploads" to zero. I'm assuming that he means that he went to Tools -> Options, and changed the "Uploads per Person" setting to zero.
First, should I be able to confirm or dispel this claim by checking the Limewire.props file? Second, if the option was set to zero, would the files in his shared folder still be visible on the gnutella network, but just not downloadable?
My next question relates to file access dates. Does anybody know if the file access date on a Windows computer can be changed by a remote user on a P2P network? In other words, does the access date change on the computer when another P2P user browses the shared folder or tries to download a file.
Any responses would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
Mark, your best bet is to perform the tests to prove what you want to know yourself.
Take a computer, install the exact same version of Limewire on it. set the options to match the subject computer and then test the computer to see if your questions can be answered that way.
If needed, use two computers and use some extremely wierd file name you can identify and see if the gnutella network can find it on the computer you are testing.
That way you can see if you can browse the test computer as if it was the subject computer in the investigation, and what exactly happens when you make the attempt.
That is what I would do anyway. I am big on using controlled experiments to document things like this when they come up.
