thanks. saw that is it comprehensive tho? its at a time like this you see how new digital forensic training is compared to other certs big players like Comptia, Ms and Cisco. I can see the exam can be studied for on your own I just need some guidance as to how to follow it.

Thanks again.

As BitHead previously said, this being a vendor-specific cert you primarily need to know how to use the tool to get the information you need. The prep course I did mostly was a rehash of the Bootcamp and Windows Forensics courses to make sure you know how to use the product.

So the best way to study is probably to use the product. Study guides will help, but if you've never used FTK before you will still struggle.

I'd say if you are confident with everything in that study guide and have been using FTK for a little while you'd have a pretty good shot at passing the KBA part of the cert. The practical part is then a combination of knowing the right places to look for things and also knowing the product.

thanks for those words of encouragement. I am confident with self learning because i obtained MS certs with self-study. BTW one more question what is the limitations on the FTK we download from their site?

IIRC there is a 5000 item limit. Also the version available for download is the 1.X version not the newer 2.X or soon to be released 3.X version.

A key factor in this certification is that you do need to have a valid licenced copy of FTK, and as such the demo will not suffice, as there are things that you need to do within the certification that you cannot do with the demo.

In my opinion, the study guide that is provided is not sufficient by itself to prepare you for the exam, but if you have done the Bootcamp and the Windows Forensics courses by AD you should be okay. I guess you could also study the actual product manuals, but you would have to combine that with other forensic information, such as detailed information on Windows artefacts etc.

Hope this helps.

I thought they lifted that requirement?

The ACE Certification consists of one multiple choice exam with both Knowledge Based and Practical Based components. There are no prerequisites. The exam may be taken in two ways

also i see this

NOTE The ACE On Your Own option requires the candidate to have access to a computer with licensed copies of FTK Imager, FTK 1.x or 2.x, Registry Viewer and PRTK. In addition, the exam is not FTK version specific and can be completed using either the 1.x or 2.x versions of FTK.

but what would the demo versions lack?

OK let me see if i can re approach this - Im starting out in forensics - apart from my B.Sc dissertation (non forensic degree but it was forensic related). Im doing the M.Sc and they use FTK - I would like to be certified by the time i finish up uni - courses too expensive to go on… can it be done through self-study?

Thanks!

If you can get enough time using FTK in Uni I would say yes. The exam is mostly about using the tool. The more time you have with the tool the more you will understand what it takes to make it perform each task.

There was a free online ACE exam 2 months ago. I recommend visiting AD website 😉
