Hi i am acquiring a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB HDD.

When i try to acquire it, Encase shows the physical disc as being 128gb, however the logical drive size for the HDD is about 248GB.

Can anyone explain why this might be??

If you have it connected via a write blocker look at it in Disk Management. What does it show? It may be that your computer does not have large disk support enabled or that you have the drive pinned to restrict it's capacity. The 128gb number is right around what you would see when having this problem.

There may be something else going on as 248gb is actually a little large for a 250gb drive.

Having similar problem with a 160gb hdd, in disk management it is shown as about 149gb, however in encase acquistion it is shown as 128gb physical and 149gb logical. We use a software write blocker and the acquisition pc is running windows 2000 SP4

The 248 was a rough guess off top off head!

As gmarshall139 says, it sounds very much like the jumper setting on your hard drives have been set to the 128GB limit.

Change the jumper to cable select, and you should have a bit more joy.

That makes things different. Check the BIOS settings on your examine machine and additionally check http//support.microsoft.com/kb/305098/en-us to enable large LBA support in W2K. Or you could just try and acquire them with XP SP2?

If that doesn't solve it then I'm afraid I don't have a clue!

Just to let you know that i added the registry setting for LBA 48-bit support and both windows + encase can now see the full 232GB.

Thanks for the help

Just for the record, when something like this happens, get here
http//www.48bitlba.com/

this page contains links to a number of useful apps
http//www.48bitlba.com/tools.htm

and here you can find a little tool to test (and hopefully fix) your system
http//www.48bitlba.com/enablebiglbatool.htm

Should you be using Win98/Me 😯
There is a solution (actually more like a Beta) here
