Since there is a lot of talk lately about investigation and Uni's, I thought I would pose a question that I had asked of me years ago to see how I would react and what my investigative knowledge was. This will test your thought process, as well as ability to think on your feet.

Someone walks into a store, (you know the name of the store) you need to know who that person is, where they live, and any other facts you can gather about the person.

You know the name of the store
You know the time and date they went to the store

For the purposes of this, you can make yourself a LE, PI, average citizen, etc.

is there any witnesses? if so, do we have any statements?
any CCTV?
is the store part of a chain or an independant?
was the store open at the time?

CCTV, Electronic Transaction data and staff witness statements would be a good start.

Did the person purchase anything? If so, is it possible to track their purchase; credit card or check?

Wouldn't it be relevant to find out and understand the gender etc at first instance?

Man, Woman, Child
ICI
etc
etc

How about a simple start - does anyone in the store know the person ? Are they a regular customer ? Do they buy anything that might link them to other services ? ( e.g. cat food, might link them to a local vet - a long shot, but possible - they may recognise a CCTV picture & you have name and address instantly ) What else did they buy ? ( You said what could we find out about the person - nappies - parent perhaps, meals for one - single perhaps, newspapers or magazines in a language other than the local [quite a lot of places in London stock multilingual material] etc. )

Quite a fun excercise -)

Going from the simple to the ridiculous - sieze the cash draw, cross reference the CCTV to identify what currency was used ( coins/notes ) take DNA samples from everything, cross reference against known offenders database in case of a hit …
