was the CCTV shown images from inside the store or could it see outside, i.e the car park?
what route through the store did the person take?
man or woman?
how were they dressed?
could you make out on the CCTV what they bought?
is there a transaction record kept on the till?

Actually, to extend that, what route did they take on the outside of the store if visible, did they turn left or right, can we track them on nearby cameras ?

no crime was committed you are just trying to identify the person

Going from the simple to the ridiculous - sieze the cash draw, cross reference the CCTV to identify what currency was used ( coins/notes ) take DNA samples from everything, cross reference against known offenders database in case of a hit …

Did anyone witness how the person arrived at the store? If it was public transportation, would there be a way to track where they boarded the bus? Are cameras placed on the bus for security reasons? If so, was there a clear image of the person's face? If they drove, did anyone notice a license plate number or make/model of the vehicle?

For the purposes of this, you can make yourself a LE, PI, average citizen, etc.

ah well then, I'm going to make myself a crooked PI with a large sack of cash to bribe CCTV operators and DNA labs 😉

Azrael, with a question as loosely defined as this you could also

Check how many entrances there are to the store (Selfridges has 9, Harrods has 8, Asda has 2……)

Which CCTV was monitoring which door

CCTV monitoring elsewhere in the building (person may have walked in and then walked out again very quickly)

Also which cash till was used (any CCTV)? And no doubt the cash till roll would be useful?

Fingerprints could be awkward as the person may be wearing gloves…?

In reality if it is linked with a crime (say) the positive identification of the person at first instance being in the store will be necessary otherwise to a court it may suggest impossibility…..

that's the whole point. Investigators think outside the box and think of different ways to accomplish things.

You see from a very vague question how many different ways there are to accomplish things.
