Ask Reddit…

You would be amazed how many times a photo (e.g. CCTV) or a description and a location gets posted on Reddit and the identity of the person is found.

If you want to be harsh about using social networks, "Release the Chans!" (i.e that unruly mob that lurks at 4chan).

How long did it take that woman who pushed a cat into the rubbish bin to be hunted down? Or that girl who stole the guys bag on the bus. Not long…

First of all forensicakb, interesting post 😉

Someone walks into a store, (you know the name of the store) you need to know who that person is, where they live, and any other facts you can gather about the person.

Are we present at the moment the person walks into the store? Or have we learned this afterwards ? How sure are we about this being reliable information ?

For the purposes of this, you can make yourself a LE, PI, average citizen, etc.

If we are present at the moment the person walks into the store, we could just ask the person. But this will depend on the fact if we want the person to be aware of our interest in them.

In such a situation we could also observe (shadow) the person.

Or if we have malicious intent use some force to obtain the information we seek 😉

Otherwise we would need to backtrack the actions of this person to find any indication of his/her identity. Any source of information that could be useful, several of them already mentioned.

No, you are not present at the time they entered.

This is all being done later, for assumption purposes you can take one day to a month, whatever helps you formulate ideas better.

Information is 100% reliable, person did enter this store at the time you are provided.

Lets start with the store
Did the person leave the store ?
What type of store it is ?
Is it a large or small store ?
Is it situated in a large or small community ?
Therefore would it make sense if the owner of the store would recall the person ?

Did this person recently started a thread on this forum about "An Investigation problem, have a look" ? 😉

Since we have CCTV, wasn't by any chance the suspect wearing a T-shirt like this one idea

(but with his actual home IP)? ?

That would be a perfect way for a digital forensic investigator to contribute …. roll

I thought I knew ALL bad geeky jokes, but this one must be the worst one I ever heard 😯 .

I am happy to be the winner D , of course, though I don't condone the use of such low tricks. roll

Ok, you're not the winner lol.

The idea was to stimulate thinking and see where people were coming from on an investigative level.

Interesting that a lot of people didn't reply, people who reply to a homework problem decide to not reply to a problem which is just for fun, but has a basis in how to investigate.

Thanks to all who replied, it was fun and I see there are a ton of smart people out there who know how to figure something out with very little information and put something together.

Hey, wait, you can't take back your word for it!

I will then self-declare myself the winner!

"Wanted dead or alive" poster outside shop for 1 month.

Then place more posters concentrically outwards by 100meters every next month.
