Android Phone - How are contacts organized?

I downloaded the contact list on an Android-powered Kyocera Zio using cellebrite. The html report generated provides a listing of the 200+ contacts - however they are not in any particular order. Relevant to my reason for downloading the phone is why entry #1, listed as "Mark!" (no parentheses) is the first contact. It is not anywhere near the first entry alphabetically. I have reason to suspect this entry was created by the phone user shortly before I did the download. Would this cause the contact "Mark!" to be placed as entry #1 or is it pure coincidence? Any insight into the organizational methodology of this particular OS is appreciated.
