Add this to the already known HTCIA as a place where people who do defense work are not welcome.

When I started doing this work, I was told don't join any organizations who are just for the defense as you don't want to be viewed as a hired gun who only does defense work when you get on the stand. Now, after many years, I wonder, why? There are plenty of people who are members of organizations who are hired guns just for LE.

Policies and Procedures for GMU 2007

Attendees

1. If you are paid via Federal, State or Local government, you qualify to attend.

2. If your company supports criminal defense work, you do NOT qualify to attend.

Armresl,

The GMU conferences are sponsored by the RCFG, which is an off-shoot of the HTCIA.

What's funny is how they handle their "qualifications". Last year, I asked if I could have a reporter I know come to the conference to write up a piece about it. I was told by the organizer of the conference that the reporter could come, but he'd have to be escorted and could not attend certain presentations due to operational security.

What I found funny about that was the fact that I, and others with no affiliation to law enforcement, could wander about freely. "Operational what?"

In looking through some of the courses / labs / presentations listed, I can understand why defense associates are not openly welcomed as some of them are restricted to LE only (NW3C).

Organizations such as NW3C recieve government funding for the training of LE only, I don't think that they would continue to recieve their funding if the gov found out they were training everyone else as well.

Just my .02 worth!

Ugh..

I'll refrain from really getting in to it, but the divisive nature of the industry makes me sick.

Hogfly,

Get into it.

Why not voice your opinion and what you have to say, it's important.

DoDForensics,

The titles to what the presentations are about are really nothing to look at…if you were to actually attend, I think you'd be a little bit shocked…

This is true. I only noticed the NW3C - INET course. I've never attended one of their conferences, so I can't say without a doubt thats the reason why defense people are restricted.

Although I do like the idea of GMU offering to pay the registration fee and lodging for select people.
