I assumed that when any apple device was in setup mode the device was either new or wiped. Have now experienced an iPad that was in setup mode but was then brought back to normal condition ( in some way ) and user data was available. Does anyone know what situations that will put used idevices in setup mode and how you can get out of it?

Perhaps when it was seized it had a pending update. I'm more of an android user myself but I can distinctly remember when installing a major update say 9-10 or 7-8 or similar the Apple iCloud sign in was requested again to verify I was the legitimate owner or the device.

Perhaps this is what you were seeing?

As above, may be the iPad had just had a software update/restore. I know my iPhone has had the welcome screen when updating / restoring from a backup.

The iPad had the "Helo" screen. I did not bring the iPad back to home screen myself so I do not know how it was done. Sounds like the iPad just had an update( major) / restore and this put it in welcome screen. Do you just need to complete the setup screens and then you are back?

I always assumed that to get to the "Hello" screen the device's previous encryption key had to have been deleted, which means all the previous data is encrypted and inaccessible. Would be very interested in finding out how this occurred.
