sorry i should have been more clear it was an encase boot CD version 5.05e dos version 7.10 this allowed me to aquire the solid state drive to a hard drive connect by USB

Thanks all for your input.

The eeepc in question is a 4gig model.

I have now successfully acquired an image without going into the OS.

Hitting esc after power on takes you to a boot menu. I booted into helix from a USB stick no problem. Did have trouble imaging via crossover using linen though.

I attached a USB CDdrive and booted into Raptor. I then created an e01 image of the solidstate memory onto another attached USB stick.

Verified in encase no problem!

Just got to get my head round the linux OS now!!

If you dont mind starting up the machine why not just

pluging a usb-stick and dd to it.

Have done that several times. Works fine.
