We use barcodes here for tracking media and equipment. For hard drives we use the barcode on the the drive label. For other media like tapes we generate our own and print it using a Zebra label printer. The readers are a few hundred dollars each. The system we use is a internal developed COC tracking system of sorts. It does its job very well.

Any $100 USB hand held reader and excel or Filemaker will work.

I have used them to track hundreds of computers and other gear.

Check for free or small $ spreadsheets online to scan into.

Or have the company excel droid build one.
