hello for an external HDD, what´s the best option for, periodically, checking it for preventing errors and problems without damaging internal data?

Just be aware to not all USB to SATA bridge chips support the translation of the SATA SMART commands. So you can't get SMART data for all USB connected drives (especially older ones).

i would recommend you have a backup of your data somewhere other than one external drive, preferably offsite like some kind of cloud storage, etc.

as others have mentioned, SMART is a good way to check a drives health, but if you cant get that working plan on replacing it every few years if you want to increase your chances of avoiding a catastrophic failure.

a robust backup solution is best as it protects you from a wide variety of failures.

1- What about chkdsk scan?

2- Regarding the SMART function, can be used any pre-made tool?

My favorite tool is Crystal Disk Info http//crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

What to look for pretty much outlined in this article (I wrote it years ago) http//hetmanrecovery.com/recovery_news/smart-parameters-and-early-signs-of-a-failing-hard-disk.htm?utm_nooverride=1

The "Smartmontools" (http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartmontools / http//sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki) package is free, easy to use (there are even multiple GUIs available such as HDD Guardian for Windows) and runs on basically any OS and can be easily scripted to run detailed tests, to send you a warning eMail when a drive is about to fail, or whatever else you would like…
