Black box data extraction

As you don't identify a device, or say what you already know ... go for the manufacturer's development kit.  It will contain a description of the device, and usually also software for playing around and testing it.  The developers forum (I'm being optimistic) is probably the right place to ask technical questions.

And that's where you have to start: with the technicalities.  Once you have those under control, you can start thinking about forensics, and reliable data recording and such things.
