I am doing an exam on a Blackberry 8800. The phone is password/puk locked. I am aware after 10 trys the phone disables itself. Has anyone had any success in getting data from these devices from just the SIm card?

Also from my training and education I am not aware of a "master" type password or work around for the PUK/Password to unlock the phone.

What data will I obtain from the SIM if I cannot get the phone unlocked?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Mark

Mark,
What tools are you using to examine the Blackberry? Have you tried the demo of Device Seizure from Paraben? It might be something to consider before the phone gets locked.

Have you contacted the wireless provider? Is there a Blackberry server involved that can be examined? What E-Mail or E-Mail accounts are synced to the Blackberry? If it is a Verizon device have you found an associated PC with the VZWSync software running?

The SIM can be a wealth of information or a complete disappointment depending on how the device is setup.

Yes, using paraban Device Seizure. The carrier will not give out the password info, without the subscriber alonsg with the security codes and questions only known by the subscriber. Its a case via a PI ( spouse & hubby cheating) so no chance of getting password from him. Anyway, the Sync desktop software is out because its a business PC.

I know the SIm may be "hit or miss" just wondering about some real experiences out there, I explained this all to the client. Thanks for your response and help.

The PIN/PUK code is set on the SIM, so best thing to do is to make an engineering SIM. This can be done by cloning the ICCID and IMSI numbers of a SIM which is in the Blackberry and put these details on a blank SIM (I know you can't get the ICCID and IMSI of a PIN locked SIM, but use a new SIM from the servise provider as the original SIM). I recommend using SIM ID Cloner, which comes as part of XRY. Once you have an engineering SIM you should have full access to the data stored on the handset. Only problem is that you will lose all the call register information. Also be very carefull when you connect the Blackberry with your computer. when you use Activesync make sure you have no .pst stored on you computer, and make sure outlook is totally empty, as even if you use a writeblocker activesync tends to write data (contact and email messages) from .pst files to the device.

Thanks for the great info. I gather i would need a Cingular SIM? This is the carrier. And any other ID SIM cloners you recommend? I think what you are saying is simply clone the SIM in the Blackberry with the new SIm, and the data should be accessible on the phone via a data cable?

Any other info greatly appreciated. Also will paraben Device Seizure with a SIM reader get any data off the SIM?

Thanks again

Hi
So if the SIM fitten in the blackberry is Cingular, what you do is get a new Cingular SIM doesnt matter if it is a pre pay SIM. if you dont have SIM id cloner then you can always use Forensic SIM Toolkit (FST) of SIMSCAN, they'll do the job. Only clone the ICCID and IMSI. This will get you access to the handset, without connecting the handset to the network. So the phone will not be able to receive calls or txt messages. Then yes after that use Device Seizure to get all the info from the handset. Aslong as the handset itself isnt password protected.
