I have been working on a few cases in my agency that have involved the use of Blackberry Messenger. Currently the forensic tools on the market do not aquire this information. Some do acquire the data but do not display the data in the reports. So far I have been invovled in five cases that are of serious crime that have involved blackberry messenger at the core of the communication. So if you recieve a blackberry that has been used by suspected gang members or drug dealers then blackberry messenger might figure in your forensic investigations.
I have used ABC Amber but due to the nature of charcter sets used in the profile names the ipd file is not fully translated.
If you require any more information or assistance then let me know.
I would welcome seeing your info bravo1800.
Just as observations I find it quite strange with BB messenger for although the User Guide states
"You do not need to sign in to or out of BlackBerry Messenger. As long as you are connected to a wireless network, BlackBerry Messenger can
keep you connected to your BlackBerry Messenger contacts. You might be able to back up and restore your BlackBerry Messenger contacts,
profile, and group membership using BlackBerry Messenger or using BlackBerry® Desktop Manager on a computer."
in reality, Desktop doesn't really seem to go afar as users home (e.g. backup and restore of the .ipd file) partiuclarly if you wish to simply copy, say, just the Messenger conversation and view them independently (not talking about 'Copy a chat'). There is a longer way around that problem but it is suprising Blackberry haven't made an independent app available, because really it seems to be such an obvious application that is needed.
If IT Admin set Policy associated BES then this is another factor to consider. Moreover, there can be problems with conversation and deleted contacts which can impact on evidence too.
