To my knowledge, the only way to do this is by doing a "chip-off" hex dump from the memory chips.

This requires a lot of equipment (about 200K$ worth) and very specialized training.

I know that the company FTS is able to perform this process for a good number of BB devices and they will provide you with a full report.

I think this is more a myth perpetrated by those that have lived off of providing chip-off services. Equipment is available at very reasonable cost and, with a bit of hand-holding, inexperienced practitioners can undertake a chip off and physical extraction within hours.

Then of course there's the challenge of decoding…..

Are blackberry handsets jtag enabled? Is there a possibility you can get the image of the volatile and non-volatile memory? Or is chip out the only way? Also where could I get the equipment from?

Thanks for the replies

It much appreciated

FTS do offer chip off services for BlackBerry devices with great success.
Please visit our website for further details http//www.forensicts.co.uk

Sorry about another "sales pitch" but we can also train and supply the equipment to do chip off, and it costs around $100,000 for a weeks training and all the hardware you need.

I would argue the process is not quite as simple as you say though fab4, the latest blackberrys actually stack the memory chip on top of the processor, so not only do you have to get the chip off the board, you also have to separate two soft (due to the heat) chips without damaging the important memory chip. The pin size is also tiny, so you need to have a good eye and very steady hand. Do-able, yes. But I wouldn't say it was for everyone, especially if the device is important to a case. But of course I am from a company who sell chip off services so make of that what you will )

Anyway, from my research, there has been very little successful work completed in extracting data from BlackBerry by other means.
I have found some pin outs for JTAG on blackberrys, but not done any work on it as yet. There has been limited work completed by the community on this, but you may find some help, for example http//elinux.org/FileBberry-7290.jpg
I have spoke with developers who claim JTAG is disabled for all the latest devices, although I havent confirmed this myself.

I have also done some work with USB and am able to get encrypted data back, but that is it so far….

The blackberry "boxes" available only offer unlocking solutions, and have no way of reading out anything further.

And yes, the fun part is definitely the decoding. More complex than any other phone we have decoded before….

I think there maybe a mistake….. Is there much demand for this kind of stuff? Or is everyone just interested in conveyor belt forensics?

😯

Assuming a going training rate of circa £450 per day (5 x 450 = 2,250), I would be fascinated to learn the list of hardware required that totals £59,000 (using today's exchange rate)…..? Please share.
