Hi everyone

Dongles Dongles everywhere
Or is it me ?????
The amount of dongles that you need now is in my opinion becoming silly;
I fully understand that the IP is precious and must be protected.
Just thinking of purchasing another application = another dongle.
I’m paranoid of losing them too!!!!
Thank god for NetAnalysis = 1 less dongle
You would think that HASP’s could integrate dongles so 4 applications work with 1 dongle via a key or a programming application run once.

Your thoughts ? Ideas ?

I just added a 6-port USB card into my computer to handle dongles. I fully understand the plight.

Be nice to see software companys supporting something like iLok where one dongle could hold all your licenses would nt it.

Hehe…I realize it's immature, but I cant help smiling whenever people talk about dongles. Of course, being American, I don't hear "bloody dongles" often and I gotta say; that one sounds scary rather than funny! lol

Yea, dongle management sucks. Be happy you're not me, I have to manage all the dongles for 20 student workstations. It's a recurring nightmare especially around finals when students from 3-4 different sessions can have up to 3 different dongles (or combination of them) signed out.

Like many of you I have a lot of dongles. As I add software, the number increases. I have a lot of enterprise editions or NAS licenses so the servers hold the dongles. I want to consolidate some of these for management purposes. However my main server only has 3 USB slots, I'm using one for the KVM switch. Has anyone had any issues with using an 8 port USB hub to hold all the dongles?

It wouldn't be that onerous if all dongles were like the one used by X-Ways Forensics. It uses native XP drivers, so it installs flawlessly and is totally unobtrusive. ) The other extreme is the WIBU, such as the Codemeter used by FTK. It requires a large installation package, consumes resources, and mounts itself as a volume, possibly wreaking havoc with pre-established paths. x

And the X-Ways dongle has the cool LED that matches the ones in my case that shine out through the plexi cutout. wink

The only issue you may run in to is power consumption, and therefore the inability to use all of the dongles if the hub is not AC powered.

ProDiscover is one of the few forensicy programs ('proggies') that doesn't use a dongle…I've liked it and used it to great extent in the past. However, the folks at TechPathways haven't updated it, and you can't even do a simple grep() search using the tool.

I've got a small wallet for all of my dongles and USB thumb drives. I've had to mark my dongles…I've got several that are very similar in size and color and don't want to get confused at 3am when I'm trying to verify the file system on an HP-UX image that I pulled off of a SCSI drive that was simply wwwwaaayyyyy slower than it needed to be.

Great issue, guys…what do we do about it?
